Individual Styling: Every Dog is Unique

Every dog is different and many of the same breed have individual shapes and different types of coats. We like to ensure your dog is styled to compliment its own body shape, coat type and of course his or her personality.

Puppies are welcome after all vaccinations are completed. Puppies first grooming session will depend on the individual pup; our priority is to keep your puppy as happy and stress free as possible. Your new puppy will benefit from new sights, sounds and smells of the grooming environment from an early age and become accustom to being handled.

With a puppies first groom it's a case of what you can do as opposed to what you want to do. Many puppies first experience has a lasting impression and with a life time of grooming ahead of him or her a good experience is so important.

OAD: Old Age Dogs

Old age doesn't come alone. As we know when we get older we may slow down have aches and pains and different sorts of problems, well it's no different for dogs. Many of my customers are old dogs and have all sorts of problems. Some are blind, deaf, have skin problems and many are arthritic.

Dogs like these need extra special care and here at La Pooch we make sure they get it. Elderly dogs are given as many breaks as they need and if a groom becomes too stressful I will end the grooming session, as they can always come back another day to be finished.

However it is our policy to recommend that elderly dogs stay with there usual groomer. Elderly dogs can find the grooming experience more stressful and therefore we feel it is of the utmost importance to minimise this. Dogs like familiarity and routine and therefore changing an elderly dogs groomer can be stressful. We always put your dogs welfare first and would rather loose a booking than, put your be loved pooch through unnecessary stress.

Saftey in the Salon

In the interest of safety and comfort, after your dogs grooming session has ended, your dog may spend a short period of time in a dog crate whilst they wait for you to collect them. This safety guideline is set out by the City & Guilds dog grooming training we undertook.

Dogs can relax and often have a little sleep. We never leave dogs tethered or run free in the salon, as this could be a potential safety risk and may cause distress to other dog.

In the event that your dog has a fear of crates, please tell us at the point of booking your appointment, as special arrangements must be made

Our salon also benefits from a secure enclosed garden with 6ft high block walls. So if your Pooch needs to spend a penny or wants a little break, they will be taken to our garden (on a lead) and you can rest assured they are in a safe and secure environment.

 Skin Care

We stock a good range of quality shampoos to suit different coats and skin types. If your dog suffers from a skin allergy, we advise you to provide a veterinary prescribed shampoo. Alternatively we stock a variety of hypoallergenic shampoo that can be used.

Our Grooming Policy:  WE GROOM HUMANELY

Our policy when a dog is presented to us in a severely matted condition is to shave the whole coat using electric clippers with a close blade. To groom out a matted coat would cause the dog massive distress, painful and discomfort, often leaving a very thinned and damaged coat. Shaving the dog is far more humane. Many dogs are traumatised by hours of  avoidable painful de-matting, putting them off grooming for life. We consider shaving in these circumstances an act of kindness. I understand that most customers want a traditional style and therefore we can start a fresh with a brand new coat on your following visit providing your dog has regular appointments, the frequency of which I can advise you of.

Matting leads to many skin conditions:

  • Hot spots and sores
  • Skin Rash
  • Flea infestations
  • Fungal and bacterial infection
  • Yeast infections
  • Moist eczema
  • Urine and faeces scalding
  • Mites and lice
  • Maggot infestation
  • Eye and ear infections
  • Severe itching
  • Discolouration/staining of fur

Also, parasites such as fleas and ticks can be present without your knowledge, because the matted coat hides them and the signs we look for.

A clipped coat may reveal skin that is inflamed, due to the lack of circulation, possible trapped dampness and dirt that has accumulated underneath. Also this process may expose sores, rash or parasites that may need veterinary treatment. Occasionally, dogs may feel itchy after a matted coat is removed and therefore may scratch and rub their skin or shake their head: this is normal, however some dogs can over scratch or shake and this may lead to broken skin. If in doubt, speak to your vet.

Dogs feel different after a matted coat is shaven off, the majority of dogs feel lighter, cooler and full of life. Very matted coats can be heavy and hot, therefore when they are removed, some find this new sensation strange and may take time to adapted to the feeling of their new coat and in rare cases a shaved dog may exhibit brief behavioral changes e.g. sulking. Regardless of where you like the dogs new look, they will feel 100% better.

Prevention is better than a cure

Don't wait until he/she is matted again; book your next appointment NOW, to ensure your dog always feels good and well cared for. This could also save you possible unecessary vetinary bills.

Thank you for understanding that at La Pooch we put your dog's welfare first. We cannot justify hours of torture. Coats grow back surprisingly quickly, but most importantly:
